Katapulco Compared to Other Search Home Pages

We would like to demonstrate how you can save time, efforts and steps if you use Katapulco as your search home page for all your Internet searches. Here is some benchmarking that we did, using typical search situations. This example uses Windows keyboard shortcut but Macs' also have similar shortcuts. Here are our findings:

Task With Katapulco Using the keyboard w/o Katapulco Using the mouse/touchpad
Check the verb "include" If Katapulco is your search home page:
  • Ctrl-N or Alt-Home
  • Type "include"
  • Press Tab
  • Type "mw" for "Merriam-Webster"
  • Type "Enter"

Keystrokes required: 12
  • "Alt-d" to go to your browser's address bar
  • Type "merriam-webster.com"
  • Press "Enter"
  • Type "include"
  • Press "Enter"
Keystrokes required: 29 *
If Merriam-Webster is in your bookmarks:
  • Go grab the mouse or move to the touchpad
  • Point "Bookmarks"
  • Click to open the menu
  • Point "Merriam-Webster"
  • Click
  • Come back to the keyboard
  • Type "include"
  • Go back to the mouse/touchpad
  • Point the search button
  • Click
Keystrokes/moves required: 16 (not to mention an impending tendinitis)
Finding "Brunswick Maine" on a map If Katapulco is your search home page:
  • Ctrl-N or Alt-Home
  • Type "Brunswick Maine"
  • Press Tab
  • Type "gm" for Google Maps
  • Type "Enter"

Keystrokes required: 20
  • "Alt-d" to go to the address bar
  • Type "maps.google.com"
  • Press "Enter"
  • Type "Sudbury Ontario"
  • Press "Enter"
Keystrokes required: 33 *
If "Google Maps" is in your bookmarks:
  • Move to the mouse or touchpad
  • Point "Bookmarks"
  • Click to open the menu
  • Point "Google Maps"
  • Click
  • Come back to the keyboard
  • Type "Sudbury Ontario"
  • Go back to the mouse or keypad
  • Point the "Search Maps" button
  • Click
Keystrokes/moves required: 24 (including an increassed risk of contracting a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome)
Even a regular Google search, such as "shortcut" Assuming Katapulco is your search home page:
  • Ctrl-N or Alt-Home
  • Type "shortcut"
  • Press "Enter"

Keystrokes required: 10
Assuming that you have the Google toolbar installed:
  • "Alt-d" to move the cursor to the address bar
  • Press "Tab" to move to the search box
  • Type "shortcut"
  • Type "Enter"
Keystrokes required: 11
Assuming that you have the Google toolbar installed:
  • Move to the mouse or touchpad
  • Point the Google search box
  • Click
  • Come back to the keyboard
  • Type "shortcut"
  • Go back to the mouse/touchpad
  • Point the "magnifying glass" logo to start a search
  • Click
Keystrokes/moves required: 15 (Not-to-mention the risk of developing a Tennis-elbow...)

Conclusion: Katapulco requires less steps, keystrokes or mouse moves. Here is more:

  • Four (4) keystrokes or moves less than using the mouse (and less time)
  • Up to 13 keystrokes less* than the keyboard method without Katapulco
  • Even a simple Google search requires one (1) to five (5) steps less (assuming Katapulco is your search home page and you use Ctrl-N or Alt-Home to bring it up)
Furthermore, Katapulco saves you the time spent going back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse. Try using Katapulco as a search home page and you may just not be able to go without it from now on!

* The keyboard approach without Katapulco's search home page may require less keystrokes than quoted if the visited web site has been viewed before and is present in the history of visited sites. However, you will still need to press the down arrow key to reach your selection from the dropdown list and then press "Enter".
